Historic Preservation Commission

H.P.C. MISSION: The Historic Preservation Commission’s goal is to preserve historic properties in the village – for the protection of historic property owners in the village, for protection of the village’s historic heritage for all its residents, for the enjoyment of visitors, and for future generations. If we work together for preservation, it’s a win-win for everyone. Commission members have special expertise and/or interest in preservation and welcome the chance to help you make informed decisions for maintaining your historic property.

"No person shall carry out any exterior alteration, restoration, reconstruction, demolition, new construction or moving of a landmark or property within a historic district, nor shall any person make any material change in the appearance of such property, its light fixtures, signs, sidewalks, fences, steps, paving or other exterior elements visible from a public street or alley which affect the appearance and cohesiveness of the historic district, without first obtaining a certificate of appropriateness from the Historic Preservation Commission." [Village of Fayetteville Code Chapter 187-47]

  • Any changes to properties within the Historic District overlay must first seek a Certificate of Appropriateness.
  • To learn if your property is within the historic overlay, you can click here to see the village zoning map.
  • The Historic Preservation Commission typically meet the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7 PM at the village hall.
  • Applications seeking Certificate of Approval must be submitted at least two (2) weeks prior to the meeting date to be placed on the agenda for review.  Submissions with all supporting documents should be filed with the village clerk's office at 425 E. Genesee Street.

Please know that historic district properties may be eligible for tax breaks. "The tax exemption shall be to the extent of any increase in value attributable to such alterations, repairs or improvements multiplied by the applicable percentage set forth in...[a] schedule."

Use form NYS RP-444a, along with requested supporting documents, to submit to the Town Assessor.

There are reference books available at the village hall, for your review, to assist with any project(s).
